Valentine's Day Math Challenge

Ryder has asked his mother to give him some money to buy Valentine's Day cards for his class party. His mother gives him $6.00 to buy the cards. When Ryder visits the store, he finds that there are 6 cards in each box. One box costs $1.40. Ryder has 20 children in his class, but he doesn't need a card for himself. He does want to give Ms. Earl and Mrs. O'Neil a valentine. (Don't worry about the tax)

a. How many boxes does Ryder need to buy to have 21 cards in all?

b. How much money will Ryder spend if he gets enough cards for the class?

c. Will Ryder have enough money?  How much money does he have left over, or how much more money does he need?

Show your solution using words and numbers. Remember SEE, PLAN, DO, ANSWER. Your solution is due on Monday.

Weekend Math Challenge

Playing Fetch
Robbie loves playing fetch with his dog Spencer. Spencer always starts by sitting beside Robbie before Robbie throws the ball. When Robbie throws the ball, Spencer runs to it and brings the ball back to the same spot. Robbie throws the ball three times.
• The first time he throws it 8 metres.
• The second time he throws it twice as far as the first time.
• The third time he throws it 5 metres less than the second time.
How far does Spencer run in total?
(Remember that Spencer runs back and forth each time)
*Important - Show your complete solution, not just the answer. Explain how you got your answer in words and numbers!
